Congratulations to Imran Mistry who has won £20,000 in funding for youth projects.

To achieve this Imran had to get in the top 20 most votes on the www.thestake.co.uk website.

A young man from Stanmore has said he is overjoyed after winning funding to create a youth group helping kids stay off the streets.

Imran Mistry, of Tintagel Drive, Stanmore, entered The Stake competition run by Barclays and Channel 4, which gives 16 to 21-year-olds the chance to pitch ideas for businesses with a social element.

His idea to set up a youth centre in Stanmore landed him with £18,000 after he received 372 votes from the public, who voted online.

The 19-year-old said: “I was up against 1,000 other people, so thought it was pretty nerve-racking and didn’t really expect to stand a chance. There was some very steep competition out there and I know I was lucky to be one of the six who won.”

Imran, who is studying youth and community work at the University of East London, said he felt there was a “gap in the market” for a youth centre of its kind.

“I hope this project will help the kids in the area have a safe base to go to. There isn’t much for them to do on weekends and after school, so they end up hanging out on the streets and get themselves, and others, into trouble. I hope this idea will motivate them to do something, as well as having something to look forward to.”

Imran will be mentored by Anthony Jenkins, Barclay’s CEO of retail and business banking, which he says will provide “invaluable” support.

Imran added: “I’m actually quite proud of myself, and I’m looking forward to this project taking off and hope the future holds very exciting things for it. Being mentored by Anthony is going to provide such invaluable support to me – I wouldn’t be able to do the project without him.”
